| History of Atlanta Dance Theatre |
Atlanta Dance Theatre...
...was founded in 1981 as a non-profit organization committed to the development of young dancers and brining professional quality performances to local audiences. Artistic Director Jonnie Kelley is dedicated to having a school and company of the highest artistic standards. The dancers are exposed to a variety of dance techniques and styles ranging from classical and contemporary ballet to jazz and musical theatre, with guest teachers a regular part of their experience.
ADT performed its first concert in May 1982, entitled “Dinner and Gershwin”, to a standing room only dinner theatre audience. In March 1983, the company presented its first annual repertory concert. In addition, “They Hear Georgia Singing”, a tribute to Georgia’s composers, lyricists and performers based on the book by Georgia Governor Zell Miller, was presented in school systems throughout the Atlanta area. An original production of Babes in Toyland debuted in December of 1991. This production, based on the Victor Herbert operetta, will mark it's 20th anniversary this season at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Choreographed by Jonnie Kelley and the late Jorge Guevara, Babes in Toyland features 100 performers ranging in ages from 4 to 60.
The company itself is derived from talent within the Dancer's Studio/Backstage School, a fixture in the Atlanta area for 40 years.
Today the company is comprised of a cross section of ethnicities -- dancers ages 9 to adult.
